Mrs. Fellows class performing "This Little Light of Mine"

We talked about Dr. Martin Luther King and African American Spirituals and Gospel music in class today. The children composed rhythm patterns with some of Dr. King's words and we created a song using "This Little Light of Mine" as the Chorus with their rhythm patterns as verses. They are supposed to jump randomly on "Shine!" I love their enthusiasm!

Donation opportunity for Music Theory program

Hello Reagan Family!
My 7th and 8th graders piloted a music notation program called "Noteflight" just before Christmas and fell in love with it!  Your student can access the composing program for free and write their own music and have it in a cloud - all for free!  However, if we want to share a music score together as a class or if they want to share their scores with each other we need the subscription service called "Noteflight Learn."  Here is a link to the fundraiser I am doing online and it has a video of what "Noteflight Learn" does.

Because we piloted this program, I did not budget for it in my classroom funds this year.  Any donation would be appreciated!  The composing program for 65 students (which includes all 7th and 8th grade band and orchestra students) is $185 for one year.

Thank you so much for supporting music in my classroom -- and specifically composing with this program!

4th Grade Recorder Letter Home

Hello!
I sent this paper home this past week with your student.

Dear 4th grade Parents/Guardians,
Each student will be using a recorder in Music Class. A recorder is a useful music-making instrument that allows all students to participate simultaneously. We will be learning musical concepts such as reading the treble clef staff and rhythmic patterns. In January we will start our unit on recorders and plan to combine both recorders and guitars later in the year!

Each student will need his/her own recorder by the week of Jan. 3 when we get back from break. Here are your options:
(1) Buy a high-quality recorder from the school. Each recorder costs
_$5.00 (payable with cash or check to Reagan Academy).
(2) Bring a recorder from home. Please do not supply your student with a
“recorder” purchased from a dollar store.
(3) Borrow a school recorder. (These have been disinfected, and each student
who uses one will be issued one for the whole year.)

The book we will be using is called “The Complete Recorder Resource Book” by Denise Gagne and the book/CD is available as an App for iphone/ipad or Android for $3.99.  I highly recommend your student getting this relatively inexpensive App.  It has all our songs on it as well as teaching resources they can use at home.  Search for Learn and Play Recorder in the App store.
Thank you!

7th Grade Halloween Spooky song-a-story

My 7th grade orchestra created this Halloween story and incorporated some of the songs we've been studying these past few months. The ending is a little odd because some unplanned things happened (like not all the lights went out) so it threw us a little. I'm proud of my creative students and their willingness to share their talents with the little children at our school. Happy Halloween!

Music AT's performing "My Paddle" and "Land of the Silver Birch" duet

I love playing music with these amazing students! Each has a different instrument part. They sing each song separately and then join the two songs in a duet on the 3rd verse. It is hard to sing at the same time! Way to to guys!

6th grade performing "Country Gardens"

This is a piece we have been working on. Notice some of the bows are not together. That is because students had a choice to play part A or B which are two different parts and they could stay seated next to someone playing a different part. Please let your student know what a good job they do and to keep practicing!

8th grade music AT's performing "Hop Old Squirrel" on Xylos and woodblocks

Sometimes on our days off from teaching 4th grade we like to play songs together - because we can! These students are so fun! Thanks to Jacey for filming for us!
