This video goes over the reasons for Mr Hoole's Backpack policy and includes some helpful suggestions on how to manage your locker and in particular your transition time between classes.

hey students parents this is me mr. who will talking about our backpacks lockers and transitions what is the method behind the madness perfectly my class where I say no backpacks why do I say that why do I do that knowing how far you have to move how much at the transition right I do it knowing knowing that there's a method behind my madness because there are good reasons not to share them with you also want to share some tips to success in how you work with all of these things Sprite for sale backpacks why they should stay in your locker and not being a classroom first of all that clutter the room in my classroom with tables and stools there is not sufficient storage space for your backpacks it kind of end up in the aisles I've had students trip over them I tripped over them and this is a normal everyday sitting I can only imagine emergency like a fire's my that we would have a very difficult time moving through the room safely and that's an issue now the wait I mean I know this picture is a little exaggerated but honestly I have seen some massive backpacks on students that almost look like this cuz it's a smaller student and I'm a huge backpack made for tour backpacks are sized based on the grey that they're expected to be used on and that's something to keep in mind if you have the same background from first grade you know it's not quite big enough for your stuff anymore also if you buy him a someone it's huge and being huge and it charges you put more stuff in there and that's an issue wait for a backpack is a problem most inspector way too heavy and it can possums health issues overtime someone or minor like I'm just a little sore stiff pretty major like some major back issues going to happen and develop some permanent posture changes have happened over back. Just been lots of studies I'm going to talk about this to us when we were in high school high school is bigger problem with this cuz we have more class large textbooks and we tried to carry them all around rather than these are locker and that just didn't quite work out as well as it should have some example wait till students and backpacks wait to see what you should plan on it somewhere 10 to 20% of your body weight is how much is a healthy load for a backpack and this is the same thing that they say for backpack camping and if you've ever not been back a camping you realize how important is your backpack weigh this is the same idea you just don't think about it cuz you only care for 5-10 minutes at a time but you're doing it throughout the whole day maybe even longer if you have to walk home particularly now 50lb child only carry Maxima 7/2 lb that's so few it's notebook like the science notebook so thin little things they aren't huge I probably weigh a pound at least the math textbook two or three pounds OK Google you easily surpass that I think you need him to surpass the 15 pound apply for a hundred pound child was just closer to the average weight in middle school that should only be 15 pounds and I guarantee I could pick up a number of backpacks in the building weigh them and I got back the average will be all over 15 lb if I plan on trying that this year so you just want to be careful about this cuz that's an issue and 20 top out a lot and then put your script back I have not been shown to lead to death of any superheroes now other dangers of backpacks damaging or losing your papers paper shove into a backpack will come out with wrinkles or tears it just has when you shove it in there and you're not careful to get wrinkled and wrinkled and torn I seen some students were very careful and that works there in the minority at least 90% of papers I can shove into a backpack get shoved into the backpack and wear something may never come out again from that backpack this is because backpacks are by Design disorganized he wanted that we have all these cool Pockets like that really thing is a bad thing as a single cab this pouch that just takes everything and you put stuff in there and it's his loss to the sands of time you can't find it right months later you'll be going through your backpack parent and student in a post I found the go directions to is this reminder. Something I should have turned it they'll find these things as they go through and sorts and it's just a mess and it's so hard and the same thing happens in our classrooms will say hey pull this out and if it's soon has it in her backpack all tonight here is zip and they're going the backpack and I was digging in there digging and it can be minutes before they find it Well if it's only one student often but the teacher will move on and that one student was digging and digging and digging and their heads in their backpack like an ostrich in the sand and they don't hear instructions I got it and the classes will be on that point and that's that makes that makes it hard on the student so I don't like backpacks for these reasons I love I love them carrying stuff but in the classroom they just aren't going to work if you don't have your backpack classroom you're not going to shove papers into it you're going to have to come up with another plan maybe a notebook or a binder or you know a folder ideas of how to keep things organized and sorted we try to help with that as we can but mattresses black hole of nothing or as I caught the backpack monster now lockers they're really not that bad I know every wants to complain about lockers but really they aren't that bad and students who follow some sleep steps agree with me on this at the end opening the locker you don't want to end up like this girl here who is just heartbroken cuz you can't get into a locker and she's been trying and trying and trying the number one thing to do is take slow at first when you rush when you're trying to open a new specific Locker that's going to be the multiple times as you rush you're going to get a little sloppy to make mistakes and each Locker is unique I know they build them all the same and The Lox should the same but that's it get used to get worn down and every Locker gets his kind of almost like a personality worth like the oldest one likes you have the number perfectly right or this one wants you to go one or two digits past the number each time you have to and what those are in the only way to do that is to practice and speed will come with practice I had a student who was very proud of how fast they were they asked me to time them and I went outside in the hallway at night time they walked up to the locker they owe they got what they needed they put away what they didn't need and they closed it and they were done in 20 seconds this was after a whole year of practice and they can do it I have other students to fight fight fight use my locker can't open it and they avoid using it and because they avoid using it they never learn how to use it and then it's kind of like it's true they don't they can open her locker because they've chosen not to for so long that now they can't becomes as part of and I want to dance you know to choose to face things get them taken care of and then move on so open the locker can happen it can be fast it just takes practice don't expect to be fast at beginning we're actually really lenient to start dear would you guys give you time to practice with your locker get with your transitions figure it all out if you take the time in the beginning Year we're really patient with you if you show up in March I had a hard time of my locker I don't care at that point you've had six seven months to practice you should be fine it shouldn't be issues right maybe it's something new would happened like your locker got jammed which oh how did it get champ won the biggest one is getting jammed it's over. she looks fine but this is not an organized Locker this is a No-No if you look close at the picture there's a backpack in there that is not a middle school size backpack that thing is teeny that is like a first-grader size back it looks cute right looks fine this whole Locker looks cute and fun but it's just not big enough right and it's not as bad as I've seen those papers first of all those papers off and get stuck in the lock switch is annoying but there's no space for a jacket in the winter time you will be cold when you're outside and your jacket will need to come off so that you can focus on class and that won't fit in here if it doesn't fit put it I've had students bring back jackets and because I could have been there lockers and in a rush to get to another class at leave the jacket and it never come back for it till the next day I'm like what what did you do at recess I was just cold have it in your locker make sure there's space to store the stuff that you need to these little locker shelves sometimes I work often I find it they just get in the way with a normal middle school or size backpack the backpack would take almost all of that space above that shelf it would be touching it hanging up so keep that in mind also don't put any on the door of the locker that you don't want to risk breaking all those things are attached by magnets which is great cuz we don't want them to say to our lockers but if you close your door lock the door too fast everything falls and that's a problem because they could break I've seen some of those mirrors in their lockers those following a break and shatter and even got a big mess to clean cuz it was your mess it was your stuff I realize you may not but I want to see maybe your luck was there and was fine and then someone bumped into it yeah that happens okay please don't put any on the door you cared that you don't want to risk breaking make sure it's stuff that is usable okay now tip for backpacks Walker's your backpack is designed hang a certain way and a key word in that sentence was hang I've seen students struggling with a backpack that fit in their locker and it says to White it doesn't go it doesn't go in and I then I've said here let me help you and I hold the back by the strap at the top and I hang it and the back the backpack Farms is nice and rectangular shape and slides right in they're designed to be hung that's they're not meant to be supported from the bottom so make sure you hang up your backpack in your locker make it so much easier okay transitions class as fast as possible with everything you need. being late to class is Hart it's not lunch reservation time sometimes you've a long way to go you've got this Minefield of friends in the hallway that want to stop and talk to you just bury students who are stopped and talked in the hallway so it makes it really hard to transition so we need to figure this out get rid of bad thoughts Kay there's some wrong thinking I bet you'll stuff and no student has does all of these I don't think all these things at the same time but I've seen all these often and I talked to the teachers and they seem he's okay the first one I thought that you must stop at your locker between every single class this will stress you out over being late because of a soffit with every class sometimes it's just too far and you're you're struggling and you're trying to get to class on time so you want to be there you don't want to miss those instructions that happened right beginning class and it's just stressful please don't try to stop you like between every class I was listening to think that I must carry everything for the whole day that just leads to an overloaded backpack which these two being disorganized and distractions and it's not good for your back please don't think I took care of everything for the whole day give me of those who think I don't need anything in class I was a nice stuff for class or we wouldn't have made it supplies list start of the school year of stuff that you need for class showing up with nothing and ended all us borrow a pencil and a piece of paper from the teacher that doesn't fly you will not succeed in classes that way you make it by but you're not going to do what I call succeeding which is where you get a decent grade material you've applied yourself I didn't say an a I said a piece of bread there's a difference I will go to class first to see what I need this is a recipe for being tardy especially going to walk past you Walker to get to the class so what you walked past Locker does it hey mister Google what do I need today and then you walk back to your locker get the stuff and then walk back to my classroom that doesn't work it's right here at this last one I'll take my backpack to class first I'll take out what I need and then I will take my backpack to my locker it's just another recipe for being tardy I had to send it to this all last year they had me right after lunch and they felt the need to come to my classroom first to take out their stuff sorted all and then go to your locker and they were tardy all the time it doesn't work does white addition if you're going to have to walk the same path from your class to the locker at least twice so not trying to save time you want to walk twice as far that doesn't work please get these wrong things out of your head's fine good plans write how to successfully transition between classes I put this quote by Benjamin Franklin if you fail to plan you are planning to fail make a plan when you look at your schedule are you trying to figure this out you need to figure out what do you need for the class and this may change you may be going to class me find okay these are the things that I need every day okay how far do you need to go if you need to go a long ways that spot not the best time to stop to go to the bathroom or to stop at your locker it might it might work and we'll talk about that but it might not be the best time when are the best times. How is it you know first grade before first grade you know she goes out bathroom when do you need it we are creatures of habit our bodies build habits even for our bathroom breaks now it may not be perfect 10:29 on the dot I need to go to the bathroom but you'll have habits and you guys can make habits plan your stops it's like going on a long car trip your parents go to the bathroom they don't ask do you need to go the bathroom and say go to the bathroom if you had a chance to go between 2nd and 3rd. A nice good long break go then you don't need to use it during 3rd or 4th. Also you're not caught by surprise wait I really do need to go I caught by that gained control by making choices and planning no I decide separate just went out to make it bigger and more obvious but separate what you need for class from what you want it's like the whole song from Princess and the Frog not what you want it's what you need if you only take what you need is actually pretty easy to carry your hand materials for three or more classes things that you need you need pencils pens a pencil bag is brilliant thing cuz it's easy Terry all your stuff if you drop it it doesn't break my pencil boxes can be cool but they break and then you may have your two or three notebooks are your one math textbook and turned all that your hands really easily I've seen some weird things as far as a distraction to the only if you think I need this in class but it's not an idiot to want some of the make total sense a sketchbook for example can be a fun thing as soon as she looks are brilliant artists but it's action unless you're an art and it can cause problems but also sometimes you really want to show off a drawing to eat it that's cool but if you're spending it minutes drawing you're not doing class work I've seen stuffed animal I've seen I see what sorts of weird things in weird ones I seen I love books but I've seen books become huge distractions where students so interested in Reading they're both of their not doing the work or the into work but they're doing a poor job of the work and that makes me sad because then I would listen to Mike you should easily have an A in my class right now you're getting a decent grade but you should have an Ami class that's what that's what is good for you because you're able to do the okay but they're distracted by your text by the reading book now there will be. Now time for the bus to be good sketching to be going to the downtime but you have to figure out what you need for the class from what you don't plan on it down time until you figure out if that's going to happen in those classes now we're going to a transition example I took a fairly average schedule from a 7th grader and we're going to go walk through at 1 that they should probably stop at your locker but they should grab and then on that will do another one where we talk about when the best time for bathroom breaks are okay and I'm going to try to draw on a screen it may be a little soft and slow I apologize I put a partial map of the cool up here it's a dated one but it still works it has all the most irrelevant teachers all the round ones for this soon at least okay and we're going to do different colors for each kind of trip from their locker so going to start out with start of day can a student of the seventh graders are lockers probably saw between plant and Mrs Colette's classroom may be on the side of this disgusting but probably somewhere in plant and collapse when is Seder lockers right here they should stop at their locker and it should grab the stuff for their first and second class. Switch is science and math cuz they're very close together and stop before school they drop off their backpack they get their stuff for science they walk to science they have science class turning the science notebook and a pencil bag is only two objects and it's super easy now we want to carry this aftermath so we need to science notebook pencil bag we need the math textbook possibly depends on what's Thomas plants using there is a math binder that you need to carry now so I've been buying her but one binder one notebook one pencil bag that's that's easy so you also have that science and you walk straight to Matt Kay brilliant that was an easy transition took you all of thirty seconds you have what you need you can do is go to your math class now we are out to choir World cultures and art but we want to stop at our locker this point because it's on the way okay so you leave math class and you're going to stop at your locker when we go Orange stop at your locker you now you leave yourself for Science and Math you grab what you need for choir which I think is just a pencil was your require folder there you grab what you need for World cultures and you grab what you need for art so you have your pencil bag World cultures and you Jake Paul we don't need a whole lot for those glasses maybe three notebooks and then you had for after your locker down to choir this is a longer route your locker love slowed down a bit but it's not terrible and with practice at lock and won't stay down very much and it's right on the way K1 Squires done you headed back to your locker is right there okay what cultures then you head back to Art so we're walking the same path a lot of time so the schedule but that's how schedules work sometimes I was going to chew the schedule that where everything is convenient perfect bite other out using a real schedule to show you how this works do after art you walk back to your locker you may be tempted to try to get into the cafeteria from the store or you're not allowed to go in at Dorsey it's keep going back to your locker at this point you should drop off all of your materials the only things that you need for lunch are your is your lunch if you have a sack lunch from home and your coat if it's War needs a coat outside of its cold over the range with that okay you grab those first okay from there you're going to head to the cafeteria with your coat and your lunch and that's it okay I'm not going to draw that one OK Google draws coming back in from lunch so lunch ends you've got the Sims dine on 101 with mrs. Simpson he got history with mr. Simpson and you got elar English language arts with mr. likes those all right by you so that's an easy easy plan was going to do all three classes at once so you walk in you annoying then to walk past mississippians classroom that's okay you go to your locker you get what you need for Dino 101 history in English and then you walk to your Dino 101 that class ends you stay in Mississippi's classroom you don't have to transition at all that's brilliant you have everything you need your good okay and then heads to your English class with muscle aches very short walk again brilliant you have everything you need K with that you're good you head back to your locker you drop off what you don't need you pack your backpack up for the end of the day you head home really really simple easy schedule to follow three kind of sets of stuff one that you started the day with one in the mail today and when are you end with so not a bad plan that was talked about when the best times for bathrooms are in this dude that was going to happen these brakes at you need okay I'm going to do will do it purple I'm going to do a smiley faces in between each class you know to say what's a great time and what is a bad time before school after school officer great time so I'm not going to do this once but let's say she's classic between science and math is a great time this is super awesome time okay my smiley faces are a little off I don't draw with a computer much but it's such a short and if you were to stop at your locker to get your stuff it's easy now from from math to choir is a bad time you need to stop at your locker and switch your stuff out and it's a lawn that's not a good time from choir to World cultures is okay soccer 8 but you could possibly do it same time from World cultures to art it's okay okay and brakes could also mean drinking Fountains at any kind of break you need to take their Sunday times at a great son that are bad okay when I make this frowny face more obvious Master choir now after art the art and lunch is a brilliant time to go and I'm going to explain why this is such a good time to go number one I realized students love to be early and first in line to lunch but let's face reality if you have mr. Pratt 4/5. You will not be first in line to lunch you too far to go you're not allowed to cut that little door in their corner you to go all around to the front of school that's not going to happen so you can either rush and get caught in a long line or you can stop at your locker stop in the bathroom take your time walk to the cafeteria and then you are there I really short line or no line or you have cycling Jean sit down okay it works brilliantly and we don't run out of food very often at the school is always something and if they run out of the choice that you wanted mrs. Austin is very nice and she tries to work with you and that's what she can so it's not like you're not going to be fed if you're not there right at the beginning so keep that in mind I mean is even a lunch after you said it will still be food I don't think you'll do I run out of anything so take your time after art that's a brilliant I'm right there to do a lunch to do a bathroom break after lunch is okay I don't like it as much because a lot of kids try to go after lunch so it is usually a wait and you want to go to your locker and get back to Mississippi this classroom so I would not call that a good time not a bad time that's not a frowny face it's just it's okay now in between systems class and mrs. Simpsons class is a brilliant time to go you have the same teacher who was located close to the bathroom that's a brilliant time to go to the bathroom because you can just step out use bathroom come right back if you want to grab anything else go to your locker bill in time to go get a drink any kind of break these are brilliant times Miss Simpson's for history and mystery lights for the right next door mr. is right across off the bathroom you know you can hear the flushes in this classroom you know is right across the hall. So it's actually a brilliant time for your locker either and it's such a short little stop okay so do you eat if you wanted to schedule we have five good chances to stop for a break we have three okay ones we have one where it really doesn't work it's doable if you make plans for your brakes if you focus you can have great time getting to and from class you won't be stressed you won't be tardy will be there for all the stuff you need and you won't have to miss too much class time for going to the bathroom or getting a drink using Hall Pass with that is that you're gone you miss instruction in that we all know it's frustrating when you don't know what to do when you come back in and the class is working on something like wait I didn't hear help what to do it's it's hard as frustrating for you if it's a group project or groups frustrated because you are or helping or not to have to explain to you and it's frustrating for the teacher who just explained it but they did say it again so proper planning would help you so I hope you guys can use this to help you I apologize this video was way longer than I wanted it to be but there's just so much to talk about and like I said there is Method behind my madness or say no backpacks there's method behind our Madness and only three minutes transition if you plan it works and I'm sorry it took me half an hour to explain it but hope you guys helping hope you watch this on a little bit faster than normal speed to get through this in a reasonable time
