Math

any questions

Dear Parents,

We are working hard this year to build solid math concepts.  Part of this process is understanding the math vocabulary.  You can click the link on the right "My Math Vocabulary".  I highly suggest you download a copy of the definitions so that you can refer to them throughout the year.  I want to highlight one example.  We no longer use the terms "borrow" or "carry".  Instead, anytime we break numbers apart or put numbers together we are regrouping.  I have found that parents sometimes struggle with this change, as I have, but it confuses the students when you help them at home.  Each math test has a section of vocabulary.  This can really affect their overall grade as tests are worth 60% of their math grade.  Assignments are worth 10% and daily fact practice is worth 10% of their grade.  You may also notice the "Make a 10" and "Doubles Addition Flash Cards" located on the right.  The Make a 10 is a memory game.  They have to match the numbers that make 10 to get a match.  The flash cards would be helpful as we want the students to memorize the doubles facts.   I hope these might be useful for your child.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

I have uploaded each of the fact flashcard sets.  Please feel free to download them for your child.  Daily practice is essential to mastery.

Thanks

This is a great site for students to use to practice their facts as well as math concepts.  There are two choices once you have logged in.  Math Facts and Math.  The Math facts will really help the students get an idea how fast they need to recall the answers to achieve mastery.  The Math choice will help them work on their second grade concepts.  They take a little assessment at the beginning of the year so it places them where they need to practice.  I hope you will take advantage of these great resources.
