Term 2 Short Story Project
During this year you are going to read many different types of stories. As we read those, you
are going to discover many different types of writing styles. Through reading in class and
independently at home we start to develop our own style of writing. This term you are going to
be exploring your own writing style by writing your own short story.
Your short story:
-should have: a plot, several main characters, a conflict, dialogue, and a resolution.
-be between 3 (full pages minimum) and 10 pages (absolute maximum).
-should be a genre you personally enjoy and feel comfortable writing in.
-should be edited and proofread several times throughout the remainder of the term by your
peers and parents.
-12 pt font, line spacing 1.5
This project is worth: 100 points

-First draft -10 points
-1st peer edit - 10 points
-1st parental edit- 10 points
-Small group review/edit -10 points
-Second draft parental review/edit-10
-Final Draft - 50 points

Hello Everyone!,
Just wanted to send out an update on what we are working on in class. Recently we read a play in class that was adapted from the novel "Frankenstein" and then a short article about artificial intelligence, from October's issue of SCOPE magazine. Students have an assignment to write an essay on Utah Compose. We are working on this in class today and tomorrow (11/7-8) and I do not consider it homework unless students do not finish on Thursday in class. I have the computers scheduled for Friday as well, but I was hoping to do other activities with them. The essay is due on Friday by the end of class (11/9).
Here is the prompt:
One of the big messages of "Frankenstein" is that we should think through what we want to create before we create it. In a recent tweet about A.I, Elon Musk quoted the creature in the story: "You are my creator, but I am your master."
PROMPT: Imagine, the year is 2050, and a super-intelligent robot has just been created. Should the robot be switched on? Justify your point of view using evidence from "Frankenstein" and the article "This Robot Wants to Help You", from SCOPE magazine.
This is an argumentative prompt, so you must choose a side. Write a response in at least 500 words. Your target score is a 24.

Hello Everyone,
This is just to let you know about an upcoming assignment that is due on Friday September 14. This week we are working on writing our first class essay on Utah Compose. This essay is a 500 word assignment (that usually means 4-5 strong paragraphs), but if students would like to, there is a contest where they can send the essay in (students received info and handout in class today) and win $1500.00. Be sure to speak with your student about this. To be clear, the contest is not mandatory, but writing the essay is an assignment.
The Prompt is as follows:
In an essay of 500 words, explain what the First Amendment to the United States Constitution means (1) for the press in the U.S and why its freedom matters; and (2) provide examples to support your position.
This essay does require a bit of research on your student's part. I am giving them 3 days in class to work on this assignment, but still some students may need to work on the assignment at home to complete it by Friday. Please help your student with revisions, proofreading, and editing.
