Porray Reading

Reading:
This year in reading, we will explore many different kinds of books to help your child enjoy reading and learn more about the world. We will work on important reading skills—like using phonics, phonological awareness, and other reading strategies—to help your child become a stronger and more confident reader. These skills will support them not just this year, but for many years to come. My goal is for every student to find books they love and to grow as a thoughtful, successful reader.

Reading Homework:

The best way for students to become better readers is by coming to class and reading at home every day. Students are expected to read for 20 minutes each day. Every Monday, they will bring home a reading log to track their reading for the week. This log should be filled out and signed by a parent, then returned the following Monday. It includes the vocabulary words for the week, a box of yes or no, and a place for a parent signature.

If your child is having a hard time reading at home, it might be that they haven’t found the right book yet! Please feel free to message me or reach out to our librarian.

Occasionally, they will have book report projects that will be completed at home (2-3 max). You will receive messages about this prior to their due dates.

Spelling Tests:

Spelling lists are included on each reading log to help students practice spelling specific words that correspond with what the students are learning about that week. (Ex: if we are learning the -ee / -ea rule, their words will include words like week, beak, etc.). There will be a spelling test each Friday which is worth 60% of their grade. Please help your child be prepared. We work on them in class, but they will need extra practice at home.

Extra Help:

If you would like additional resources to use with your child, I suggest having the students go onto Lexia to build phonics skills.
