Term 1 Book Report /Book Jacket

Hello 5th Grade Families,

I hope you are all settling into the new school year and finding a good routine!

My name is Mrs. Blackburn, and I am your student’s small group teacher and reading specialist. I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself and share some information about homework and upcoming projects.

Reading Calendars
Yesterday, I gave each student a monthly reading calendar to track their reading minutes. Students should read 20–30 minutes each night (about 400 minutes per month). The calendar must be filled out daily and signed by both the student and a parent. A new calendar will be sent home at the beginning of each month and is due at the end of the month.

Book Reports
Each term, 5th graders will complete one book report. This term’s project will be a book jacket, focusing on fiction books of at least 100 - 150 pages. Please note: graphic novels will not be accepted.

  • Books must be chosen by Friday, September 5th

  • The completed project is due Thursday, October 3rd
Students received detailed instructions, a rubric, and an example in class. The book they select for the project can also count toward their reading calendar minutes.

All instructions and resources have also been uploaded to my teacher website for your convenience.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you and your students this year!

Warmly,
Mrs. Blackburn
